Still Being Born by Kevin McCalix

Lyrics

Best I Ever Had

I look out on the horizon
But I can't see very far
The storm clouds are rising
And they'll soon enough be right where we are
The ocean around is boiling
Poseidon must be pretty mad
All I can do is think about you
You were the best I ever had
You were the best I ever had
The best I ever knew
Now it's too late, but I see that it's true
You could always make me feel
Like I was really real
But now, there ain't nothing that I can do
It's kind of strange which memories remain
And which ones will fade away
How as I'm feeling these first drops of rain
I keep on thinking of your face
And I can swear I can smell the scent that you wore
That first night that we met
For heaven's sake, I've made my share of mistakes
But losing you is my only true regret
You were the best I ever had
The best I ever knew
Now it's too late, but I see that it's true
You could always make me feel
Like I was really real
But now, there ain't nothing that I can do
There's no use trying to outrun it
The storm's closing in too fast
And no way in hell we can outgun it
I guess it's true that nothing really lasts
And if your thoughts should ever turn to me
I hope you will not be sad
Remember the good times, and forget the bad
My time with you was the best I ever had
You were the best I ever had
The best I ever knew
Now it's too late, but I see that it's true
You could always make me feel
Like I was really real
But now, there ain't nothing that I can do

My Human

He's a pretty good guy, I guess
I mean, at least he tries, more or less
Never really seen him do much that's wrong
Most days he never does nothing at all
Goes from his bed to his desk to the couch
Where he sits watching pictures dancing on the wall
But still, he's my human
And I'll always come when he calls
And when we go for a walk, oh man, it's a blast!
We usually go round the pond
Sometimes we go down by the tracks
And I really want to explore beyond that gate
But he tells me that it's just not safe
But I see the way he watches the trains going by
With that faraway look in his eyes
I guess we're not so different
My human and I
Sometimes he gets mad and yells
Like when I get in the trash
I know I shouldn't, but it smells so good
That I forget
But he's never once made me think he'd take me back
Like the people I had before
He gave me a home and a family
What dog could ask for anything more?
Yeah he's my human, and I know that down to my core
And when we go for a walk, oh man, it's a blast!
We usually go round the pond
Sometimes we go down by the tracks
And I really want to explore beyond that gate
But he tells me that it's just not safe
But I see the way he watches the trains going by
With that faraway look in his eyes
I guess we're not so different
My human and I
He's a pretty good guy, I guess
I mean, at least he tries, more or less
Never really seen him do much that's wrong
Most days he never does nothing at all
Goes from his bed to his desk to the couch
Where he sits watching pictures dancing on the wall
But still, he's my human
And I'll always come when he calls

Here to See

Well, I don't know but it might be
That I'm only here to see
A little clearer
Bring my vision a little nearer
To what's real
And you ask me to believe
In this book which you claim to read
And I wonder
I wonder if you've read it all
Or did you just skip ahead after the fall?
Well I don't know if you know
But there's some ugly stuff inside
Can you explain Jericho?
Cause it sure sounds like genocide to me
And you wonder why I don't believe
Well even if somehow I knew
That every single one of them words was true
I don't think
That I could ever kneel down and pray
To any god who could act that way
I'd stand and look him in the eye
And I'd ask how he could justify
His actions
Though he'd send us to hell if we did the same
Hell, even now we've got to live with Original Blame
So though your dreams, they may sound nice
I don't think they will suffice for me
Cause they don't fit with what I've seen
With my own eyes
But I sure hope that you win your prize
I'd rather know that I don't know
Than just base my life on some scribbled words
That were set in stone
A couple of thousand years ago
And they've been handed down
Authors unknown
Well, I'll admit it's got some good advice
Especially that bit about being nice
To others
Now, there's an idea I can get behind
But most of the rest
I'm sorry, but I just don't buy
So you can quote me chapter and verse
I'm sure it took a long time to rehearse
But I wonder
Can you still speak from the heart?
Or did you lose yourself in the part you're playing?
Do you even hear what I'm saying?
Well, I don't know but it might be
That I'm only here to see
A little clearer
Bring my vision a little nearer
To what's real

Brick by Brick

I saw myself in the mirror today
I don't mean to brag, but I've got to say
I kind of liked what I was seeing
And it's been a long time since I've felt this way
When I could look around, and say that I'm okay
Like I had a future I could believe in
Brick by brick
Stone by stone
Thought by thought
Poem by poem
This world is still taking form
Well it's been a long road that's brought me here
And when I'm honest with myself, I think it's clear
Never would have made it this far on my own
Some of them roads had already been paved
And I've lost count of all the times I've been saved
By someone's voice on the other end of the telephone
Brick by brick
Stone by stone
Thought by thought
Poem by poem
This world is still taking form
I'm not quite sure when it turned around
But there's still a long road stretching out
Ahead of me, and I can't wait to drive it
Cause when I look around, it's mighty plain to see
We're all making history
And there ain't a thing in all the world quite like it
Brick by brick
Stone by stone
Thought by thought
Poem by poem
This world is still taking form
Well now, the Bible says it took just six days
Till this world was all done being made
Well, I don't know, but I kind of think it might have got that wrong
Cause as long as there's people to think
To live and learn and love and sing
We'll all keep making it up as we go along
Brick by brick
Stone by stone
Thought by thought
Poem by poem
This world is still taking form
Brick by brick
Stone by stone
Thought by thought
Poem by poem
This world is still taking form
Yeah, this world is still being born
